Expectation, Meet Reality

I know that restaurants experience high failure rates but this one bummed me out because I liked it and it was right around the corner from my loft.

Expectation...

...dashed against the rocks of bitter reality.

And, yes, both signs were up at the same time.

Know what you mean. In the mid 1990s, there was briefly a restaurant called Memphis on Columbus Avenue around 76th St. in Manhattan. One of my favorits. And then it was gone, replaced by something bland. I still mourn Memphis's passing.

Mike! Where have you been? We've missed you.

Fortunately for me, the mothership of the place I photographed is still in business so it's a matter of convenience rather than loss.

But having a favorite place such as your example of Memphis close really does suck, in large part (IMO) because dishes you love can be lost to you forever. I wrote about this ages ago in http://grumpyglutton.com/2008/03/28/zen-and-the-art-of-restaurant-dining.aspx.
