Grumpiness Loves Company
When Eater SF posted a link to listing of the Ten Most Overrated Restaurants in the United States (and New York City and Europe — the praised and panned Michael Mina was the only San Francisco entry in the U.S. list), it was near and dear to my heart. By far, my most popular post to date has been The Ten Most Overrated Restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area.
It also got me thinking — how many other most overrated lists are out there? Here's a sampling of what I found, ignoring lists on sucktastic sites such as Yelp.
1) Most overrated in America from the Wall Street Journal, a bit dated as it comes from 2003 but a good read nevertheless. Having eaten at Chez Panisse (at least the upstairs café) and The Ivy, I have to agree with the author's assessment (although The Ivy does have some kick-ass corn chowder). His crack that Chez Panisse is "A dinner party thrown by aging hippies with a really great vegetable garden" is priceless!
2) Most overrated in Minneapolis from a local online forum. I'm surprised that there are overrated restaurants in Minneapolis — I didn't know they had any restaurants that anyone thought were good. (Yes, my snark factor is way high today.)
3) Most overrated in New Haven from the Fat and Happy Food Slut. Ditto my comments on Minneapolis.
4) The Fat and Happy Food Slut also offers a different take on New York's most overrated.
5) One take on Chicago's most overrated from Gapers Block.
6) Another take on Chicago most overrated from a frequent flyer message board.
7) Most overrated in Washington, D.C. from BlogTrippers. A rebuttal to this list is available at Apples and Bananas.
8) Most overrated in Lincoln, Nebraska. You know a city's dining scene is in sorry shape when someone names Applebee's the two most overrated restaurants in town.
9) Evidently, there's only one overrated restaurant in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Either that or no one reads mcfoodie.
10) Most overrated in Louisville from a local online forum.
That's all the company this grump can stand! I'll end with a quiz. The first person who responds with the correct answer in the comments section will win some yet to be determined but highly desirable prize!
How do you pronounce the name of the capital city of Kentucky? Is is Lewis-ville or Lou-ee-ville?

OOh..a trick question, eh??? I think the locals say "Lew-a-ville". Not sure....cheers, Adam

It is a trick question, I'll grant you that.

I think it's pronounced how it looks: Frank-fort

Adam, you were right. It was a trick question. But it was a different trick!
Now I gotta figure out Christie's prize.
